Three jobs need measuring — the high concentration during the exposure phase, the last few ppm before re-entry, and leaks into the rooms around the space — and no single sensor does all three well. This guide explains the sensor types, where to place them and how to keep them accurate.

Fenggu VHP engineering team3 min readUpdated October 2026

Key points

Process sensors measure hundreds of ppm during exposure; low-range sensors measure the last ppm before re-entry; area monitors detect leaks around the space.

Water vapour and hydrogen peroxide are measured together in many process sensors, which is how relative saturation and condensation risk are calculated.

Low-range electrochemical cells can be overloaded or slowly damaged by long exposure to process concentrations, so they are usually kept out of the exposure phase.

Place process sensors at representative and worst-case points, not next to the injection point.

Sensor drift is normal. Calibration and bump testing at fixed intervals are part of keeping the cycle validated.

Three measuring jobs

Job

Typical range

Why it matters

Process monitoring

Tens to roughly two thousand ppm

Controls injection and records the concentration during the exposure phase, the core of the validated cycle.

Residual / re-entry

About 0–10 ppm, resolution to 0.1 ppm

Shows when the space has aerated below the release limit, commonly 1 ppm.

Area / leak monitoring

About 0–10 ppm

Warns people in adjacent rooms and corridors if vapour escapes through doors, ducts or penetrations.

The middle row is covered in more detail in aeration and residual hydrogen peroxide. This article focuses on choosing and keeping all three accurate.

Sensor types

High-range process sensors

Two approaches are common. Thin-film capacitive sensors respond to the combined water and hydrogen peroxide vapour; with an added temperature measurement they report H₂O₂ concentration, humidity and relative saturation together. Optical sensors measure absorption of infrared or near-infrared light at wavelengths specific to hydrogen peroxide and water, without the gas touching a sensing element. Both are built for continuous exposure to process concentrations.

Low-range electrochemical sensors

An electrochemical cell produces a current proportional to the hydrogen peroxide reaching its electrode. These cells are sensitive and inexpensive, which suits residual and area monitoring. They have limits: long exposure to high concentrations can saturate or shorten the life of the cell, they can respond to other oxidising gases, and their output depends on temperature.

Why humidity matters to the measurement

Hydrogen peroxide and water vapour condense together. What decides whether condensation forms is not the H₂O₂ concentration alone but the relative saturation of the combined vapour at the surface temperature. A sensor that measures both — or a peroxide sensor paired with a humidity sensor — lets the control system keep the cycle in the intended window and record it. The relationship is explained in VHP concentration, humidity and condensation.

Conventional humidity sensors placed in hydrogen peroxide vapour can read wrongly, because many respond to peroxide as if it were water. Check that any humidity sensor in the space is specified for VHP use.

Placement

Not at the injection point. Concentration there is always highest and says nothing about the rest of the space.

At a representative point and, where possible, at the worst-case area found during distribution mapping — often the far end of the room or behind large equipment.

Near the coldest surfaces if condensation risk is the concern, since relative saturation is highest where surfaces are coldest.

Away from direct airflow from fans or supply diffusers, which can make readings fluctuate.

Area monitors at breathing height outside likely leak points: door frames, pass-through hatches, service penetrations and return-air paths.

In isolators and pass boxes, sensors are normally fixed in the chamber or exhaust path by the manufacturer; check where, and whether the position was confirmed during qualification.

Calibration and checks

Calibration: against a traceable reference at the interval the manufacturer and your risk assessment set, commonly 6–12 months, and after repair or replacement.

Bump test: a short exposure to a known source before critical use, to confirm the sensor still responds — especially for area monitors relied on for personnel safety.

Zero check: confirm the reading returns to zero in clean air.

Record drift: trend the as-found error at each calibration. A sensor that drifts more and more is approaching the end of its life.

Treat sensor replacement as a change. A new process sensor, or one moved to a new position, may need verification that the cycle still meets its validated limits.

Questions to ask about a VHP system’s sensors

What does each sensor measure, over what range, and where is it installed?

Are H₂O₂ and humidity measured by sensors designed for peroxide vapour?

What is the calibration interval, how is calibration done, and can it be done on site?

Are readings stored with each cycle record, and can they be printed or exported?

What happens if a sensor fails or reads out of range during a cycle?

Fenggu VHP pass box.
